FERRY TRIPS AND
EXCURSIONS ON THE BAY OF SANTANDER
Ferrying passengers
from one shore to another in the remarkable surroundings
of the Bay of Santander, which the Romans called "Portus
Victoriae", dates back to the beginnings of time.
Over the centuries, the original rowing boats were replaced
by sailing boats and then steam boats before the arrival
of the modern passenger ferry boats.
Those first primitive
vessels gave way to steam boats which were the basis of
a very popular service known as "Las Corconeras".
This service started in 1841 and connected the city of
Santander to the shore towns of Pedreña and El Astillero
and the beaches of El Puntal. In 1879, another and equally
popular passenger service, known as "Los Zarcetas" took
over. In 1901, the DIEZ HERMANOS company run by the sons
of the founder, Manuel Bedia Castanedo, arrived on the
scene. In 1918 this company established the regular passenger
ferry service between Santander and the towns of Pedreña
and Somo, operating a daily service with modern boats complemented
by the daily trips to the beaches of El Puntal in the middle
of the bay. These routes still operate today with a regular
service in both directions every half hour.
LOS REGINAS has
a modern catamaran motor boat, "Regina Décimo" equipped
with the Panoramic Vision System to view the sea bed. It
is used for excursions around the bay and beyond.
In the spring-summer-autumn
season the company also organises excursions around the
bay and out to the Sardinero cove visiting the most attractive
spots along the coast line, and especially the unforgettable
maritime-river trip to the Cubas ria whose banks are littered
with unimaginable delights, as portrayed by local novelist
Jose María de Pereda in his novel "Summer Clouds (Nubes
de Estío)". The whole area bristles with nature
and an unforgettable local colour together with a wildlife
that tranports visitors into an exotic world they could
only dream of.
N.B. Subject
to prior agreement, private excursions, business and social
meetings, etc. can be arranged on the catamaran or any
other vessel suitable for the purpose.
